Richard Gilbert ('Dick') Emery
Sitter in 2 portraits
Dick Emery's parents were the comedy double act Callan and Emery. During World War II, he was called up to the RAF, but joined the chorus line of The Merry Widow at the Majestic Theatre, London instead. After the war, he performed on various radio and television shows, but he is best remembered for The Dick Emery Show, which ran from 1963 until his death. It was a huge success with the public, frequently featuring in the top ten audience ratings. The show consisted of sketches involving Emery dressed up as various characters, including a leather-clad vicar, Hettie, a frustrated spinster, and Mandy, a voracious busty middle-aged blonde woman with the catchphrase 'Ooh, you are awful, but I like you!'
