Arthur Elsden moved to Hertford from London in 1859 and took over the studio of J. Craddock, which is believed to be Hertfordshire's first professional studio. Photographing the most notable people and buildings in the area, Elsden recorded the changes in Hertford, a project continued by his son, Arthur Vincent Elsden (1850-1929). Many of these photographs are now held in the Hertford Museum.
