Polish painter, Jankel Adler studied in Barmen and Düsseldorf. He was primarily a figure painter, best known for his portrayals of Jewish life in Poland. In the 1930s his paintings were classed as 'degenerate' by the Nazi regime. He left Germany in 1933 and lived mainly in Paris. On the outbreak of war he joined the Polish army in France. In 1940 he was evacuated to Britain where he lived for the rest of his life, initially in Scotland and then in London from 1943.
