Her maiden name was Ann Edwards and was baptized on November 27, 1842 in Albrighton, a small agricultural community which then belonged to the county of Staffordshire (now Shropshire). His parents, George (b. circa 1815) and Mary (born circa 1822), were born in other places from the same county. The father was a manual laborer who performed various jobs (water works fitter, labourer, brick layer). Ann was the first child of the Edwards family and had at least two sisters. In his childhood he had to move several times, but within a few kilometers. Ann Edwards married Charles Joseph Keene, from Bristol, in 1865. He was an accountant and amateur artist. They had four daughters, Taigi, Laura, Jessie and Elizabeth. She was described as "lovely and pious". She died in the early twentieth century, with nearly sixty years.
