In 1933 Ellington changed his name from Henry Pitts Brown to Ray Ellington after watching the Duke Ellington Orchestra and began playing in London clubs. In 1947, inspired by American bepop music, he formed the Ray Ellington Quartet. The comedic jazz group was one of the most successful post-war groups and regularly appeared on the Goon Show.
