Joseph Chila (1948-)
Artist associated with 2 portraits
Born near Mbouda in the West Province of Cameroon, where he set up a studio in 1974. In 1975 he moved to Mayo Darlé after discovering that there was no photographer in the area. He remained until the mid-1990s when he retired to Bankim, where he now farms and undertakes occasional photographic commissions. As part of its Africa 2005 season, the National Portrait Gallery invited two Cameroonian photographers to take part in a two-week residency in London culminating in a display at the Gallery. During the residency, studio photographers Samuel Finlak and Joseph Chila made a series of portraits of Londoners and Cameroonians living in London
