Dame Frances Mary Ashcroft

(1952-), Professor of Physiology

Professor of Physiology. Ashcroft read Natural Science at Cambridge, before completing a doctorate in Zoology. Ashcroft was appointed to a Lectureship in Physiology at Oxford University in 1990 and to a Professorship in 1996. Ashcroft's research aims to understand how a rise in blood sugar concentration levels, causes the hormone insulin to be released, and why this process does not work properly in individuals with type 2 diabetes. Ashcroft was made a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1999.
