Joe Calzaghe

Born in London, Calzaghe grew up in Wales and began boxing aged nine. He made his professional debut in 1993 and in 1995 he won the British Super Middleweight title and was named Young Boxer of the Year. After being taken on by promoter Frank Warren, Calzaghe defeated Chris Eubank to become the WBO (World Boxing Organization) Super Middleweight champion in 1997, a title he defended for over ten years and in 2006 he won the IBF (International Boxing Federation) Super Middleweight title. In November 2007 he became the first undisputed Super Middleweight world champion. Often named 'The Pride of Wales', Calzaghe was awarded an MBE in 2003 and in December 2007 became the BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
