Born in Stockholm, Oldenburg studied literature and art history at Yale and took evening classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1956 he moved to New York, exhibiting his first Pop art objects in 1959 at the Judson Gallery. In 1959-60 he used collage, plaster and papier-mâché to create oversized consumer goods, offering them for sale in The Store - an art environment in shop form. He began designing monuments of scaled-up ordinary objects in 1965, which he produced with his wife, Coosje van Bruggen, from 1976. His retrospectives include those at the Pasadena Art Museum (1971-2), the Walker Art Center (1975), the Museum Ludwig (1979) and the National Gallery of Art in partnership with the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum (1995).
