British-born to Ghanaian parents, Amma attended the Barbara Speake Stage School in London, training in dance and drama. As an actress she appeared in the television school drama Grange Hill. Leaving acting in her late-teens, she founded her own production company Tantrum Films, writing and producing two series of the BBC2 drama Brothers and Sisters. She made her directional debut with A Way of Life (2004), winning a number of awards including at a the BAFTA Film Awards, the Carl Foreman Award for Special Achievement by a British Writer, Director, or Producer in Their First Feature Film. Her second feature film, Belle (2013) received much critical acclaim in both the US and UK.
