Frankie Vaughan (1928-1999), Singer and actor
Frankie Vaughan (Frank Abelson)
Sitter in 7 portraits
While studying to be a teacher at Leeds College of Art Vaughn sang at a college revue and was put in contact with the agent Billy Marsh who booked Vaughan for the circuit of variety theatres. His act was strongly influenced by Hetty King who he had met when appearing on her show New Stars and Old Favourites. King helped Vaughan develop his nonchalant top hat and tails style and advised him to make the song 'Give me the Moonlight' his signature tune. Known as 'Mr Moonlight' he enjoyed great success and appeared alongside Marilyn Monroe in Let's Make Love. Vaughan was awarded a CBE in 1997.
