'Dinghy' Young or to give him his formal title, Squadron Leader Henry Melvin Young, DFC and Bar, (72478),went on to become a legendary RAF pilot. He completed two tours of duty (ditched twice, hence his sobriquet) and volunteered for another with a special duty squadron, initially 'X' Squadron (once issued with its official number, 617 Squadron). He was the senior flight commander, and it was on his return flight after successfully bombing the Mohne dam that he was shot down while crossing the Dutch coast. Sadly, he was lost with all his crew - 7 of the 53 men killed on the dams raid (Operation Chastise). However, as the original dambusters they have all gained immortality.
