Lady Edmonstone was born Ida Agnes Eleanor Forbes. Her father was George Forbes, son of Sir Charles Stewart Forbes 3rd Baronet. As a girl, Ida lived at 23 Pont Street, Belgravia, London. Her mother lived at this address until her death, after which the house contents were sold by Sotheby's at auction. The family's Broadwood grand piano which was purchased in 1871 (shortly after Ida's birth, was listed in the auction catalogue and still survives today. The current owners of the piano have traced its history through the Broadwood company records.

The baby, William George Edmonstone, (godson to the future George V) joined the Coldstream Guards from Eton in 1915. He was killed near Ginchy in the Battle of the Somme on September 15 1916. Following his mother's death in 1946, a cross was donated to the Guards Chapel at Wellington Barracks in London in memory of both of them. A jewel-encrusted silver locket in the shaft supporting it contains a lock of Willie's hair. The locket is engraved with "In love of Baz Willie October 1896", which was when he was born. The inscription on the back of the shaft reads: "In memory of William George Edmonstone, Lieut. 2nd Batt Coldstream Guards, killed in action 15 September 1916 and also his mother Ida, Lady Edmonstone". The cross was recently restored and is still used in services in the chapel.
