Vice Admiral Sir John Gilchrist Thesiger Inglis KBE, CB was born 8 June 1906. He was the son of The Reverend Rupert Inglis, Rector of Frittenden, Kent and his wife Helen Mary (nee Gilchrist). John was the grandson of General Sir John Inglis (Defender of Lucknow) and of Lady Inglis (Julia Selina, nee Thesiger). John's father, Rupert Inglis, a former England rugby international, served as an Army Chaplain in the First World War and was KIA in September 1916 when bringing in wounded near Ginchy (the Somme). John Inglis (known as 'Tommy' throughout his life) was educated at Lockers Park School and then at the Royal Naval College, Osborne and Dartmouth. From 1954-60 he was Director of Naval Intelligence. In 1945 he married Maude Dorrien (nee Frankland) and they had one daughter. John died in 1972 aged 66.
