Painter. Born near Swansea, Richards studied at Swansea School of Art (1921-4) and the Royal College of Art (1924-7), where he later taught (1956-61). He exhibited with the Objective Abstractions group in 1934 and was included in the International Surrealists Exhibition (1936). During the war Richards taught at Cardiff School of Art. Poetry, particularly that of Dylan Thomas, and music were inspirations throughout his life. He designed sets for opera, stained glass for Derby Cathedral and the furnishings for the Blessed Sacrament Chapel in the Roman Catholic Cathedral, Liverpool (1966). He represented Britain at the Venice Biennale in 1962.
