Mary Grant was the niece of the painter Sir Francis Grant, president of the Royal Academy. She studied first in Florence then in Paris, and finally in England under J.H. Foley. The majority of Grant's work comprised portrait busts of many leading figures of the day. She also produced figures for the screen in Winchester Cathedral, an altar screen for a church in Kilburn, and figures for the porch of Lichfield Cathedral.
