Sportsman and politician, Coe was chair of LOCOG, the company responsible for preparing and staging the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. As an athlete he won gold in the 1500m and silver in the 800m at both the 1980 Moscow Olympics and the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics. Retiring from athletics in 1990, the twelve-time world record holder became Conservative MP for Falmouth and Cambourne (1992-97). He was made a life peer in 2002, knighted in 2006 and chaired the London 2012 bid team (2004-05). In 2012, he was elected to chair the British Olympic Authority and in 2015 became President of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF).
