John Trevor Hayes (1929-2005), Art historian; Former Director of the National Portrait Gallery

Art historian. Director of the National Portrait Gallery 1974-94. Hayes introduced the annual Portrait Award for young artists and placed the commissioning of contemporary portraits at the heart of the Gallery's work. He was also responsible for a series of great acquisitions and exhibitions and for overseeing the 1993 extension including the ground floor galleries and the Heinz Archive and Library. His publications include catalogues of the works of Thomas Gainsborough, and studies of Richard Wilson, Thomas Rowlandson and Graham Sutherland.
