Art historian, author and museum director; joined the staff of the National Portrait Gallery 1946, Director 1964-7; Director of the Fitzwilliam Museum Cambridge 1967-73; first Director of the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford 1973-85; author of The English Face (1957), The Companion Guide to London (1964) and Trial by Battle (1959), a novel which drew on his own war experiences in Malaysia.
