Sir Peter Maxwell Davies
(1934-2016), Composer and conductorSitter in 6 portraits
A successful conductor and prolific composer, Maxwell Davies's output includes symphonies, concertos, opera, chamber music and scores for ballet and film. In 1971 he moved to the Orkney Islands, a source of inspiration for compositions including his first two symphonies and An Orkney Wedding with Sunrise (1985). Once regarded as something of an enfant terrible, his knighthood in 1987, 2004 appointment as Master of the Queen's Music and appointment as a Member of the Order of the Companions of Honour in 2014 reflect his position as a leading cultural figure.
