Melvyn Bragg, Baron Bragg

Born in Cumbria, Bragg read Modern History at Wadham College, Oxford University. He began his career in 1961 as a BBC trainee, three years later he was appointed editor of BBC2's first arts programme, New Release. Bragg is best-known for the arts programme The South Bank Show, which he edited and presented for thirty three years for LWT. On BBC Radio 4, he has presented Start the Week (1988-98) and In our Time (1998 to present). In 1998 Bragg was appointed a life peer. He is the author of several screenplays, non-fiction works and novels, including The Soldiers Return quartet (1999-2008).
