Best-known as the presenter of the self-named interview programme Parkinson (1971-1982, 1998-2007), Sir Michael began his career as a reporter on local papers in Yorkshire. After working at the Manchester Guardian and the Daily Express, he became a producer and presenter for Granada Television. On BBC radio, he presented Desert Island Discs (1985-88) and Parkinson's Sunday Supplement (1996-2007), where he is credited with raising the profile of contemporary jazz. With a keen interest in sport, particularly cricket, he wrote regular sports columns for the Sunday Times and the Daily Telegraph. During his epic career spanning 7 decades he interviewed over 2000 celebrities including Muhammed Ali, Elton John and Madonna. His conversational style of interviewing put his guests at ease and despite his own high profile he always put his guests at centre-stage and encouraged them to shine. This led to many lifelong friendships with celebrities being forged through mutual admiration.
