Sylvie Guillem

(1965-), Ballet dancer

French ballet dancer. Guillem trained as a gymnast until the age of eleven when she began studying at the Paris Opera Ballet School. In 1981 she joined the company's corps de ballet and within three years had made the rapid rise to become the company's youngest ever principal dancer. In 1984 she moved to London and became a principal guest artist for the Royal Ballet. In 2001 Guillem was the first winner of the Nijinsky Prize for the best female dancer. She also performs contemporary dance.
