Born in Milan, Scacchi trained at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School, paving her way by fashion modelling, before acting on stage, television and film. Made her film debut in Das Zweite Gesicht in 1982. She has made over seventy films, including Heat and Dust (1982), White Mischief (1987), Presumed Innocent (1990) and The Player (1992), and a score of television dramas - she won an Emmy for Rasputin (1996) in which she played the Tsarina Alexandra and was acclaimed for her appearance in the BBC's production of War and Peace (2016). She has also starred on stage a score of times in plays by such dramatists as Pinter, Chekhov, Ibsen, Strindberg, Rattigan, Osborne, Mamet and Tennessee Williams.
