Jean Rhys (Ella Gwendoline Rees Williams)

Novelist, born in the West Indies to a Creole mother and Welsh doctor father. Educated in Dominica and moved to London in 1910 to train at RADA. Whilst living in Paris she met writers including Hemingway, Joyce and Ford Madox Ford, who encouraged her writing. Now best known for her 1966 novel Wide Sargasso Sea, based on characters created in Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre.
