Francis Poulenc
(1899-1963), French composer and member of the group Les SixSitter in 2 portraits
Poulenc was an avant-garde composer and member of the French group Les Six. His first surviving composition, Rapsodie Nègre (1917), brought him to the attention of Stravinsky, and led to a commission from Serge Diaghilev to write the music for the ballet Les Biches (1924). In 1956 he was asked by Britten to perform and lecture at The Aldeburgh Festival, and two years later his surrealist comic opera Les Mamelles de Tirésias was presented there.
