Princess Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse

(1843-1878), Third child of Queen Victoria; wife of Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine

Sitter associated with 112 portraits
The great-grandmother of Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh, the consort of Queen Elizabeth II. She had a reputation for sweetness of disposition, and was said to play the role of peacemaker in the often stormy royal household. In 1862 she married Prince Louis of Hesse; the couple lived at Darmstadt, Hesse and had seven children. An interest in child welfare led the princess to make the Neues Palais a centre of philanthropic activity. It was later learned that Alice carried and passed on the haemophilia gene she inherited from Queen Victoria to several of her own children.
