Henry Bennet, 1st Earl of Arlington(1618-1685), Politician, Lord Chamberlain
Sitter in 19 portraits
An important politician, Bennet was appointed Secretary of State at the Restoration, and led the opposition to the Earl of Clarendon in the Council. He later became the dominant figure in the so-called 'Cabal' ministry, and was privy to the secret part of the Treaty of Dover, made in 1670 between Charles II and Louis XIV. He was created Earl of Arlington and a Knight of the Garter in 1672, but was unpopular and perceived as a promoter of Catholicism and a schemer. He rapidly fell from prominence after 1674.
