A popular songwriter, Thomas Haynes Bayly was celebrated and ridiculed in equal part for his sentimental ballads. His output was huge and he was famed for the speed of his writing. Among his most popular songs were I'd be a Butterfly, She wore a Wreath of Roses and Oh No, We Never Mention Her. He also wrote thirty-six plays and farces, many of which achieved commercial success.
