Sir George Howland Beaumont, 7th Bt
(1753-1827), Art patron, connoisseur and landscape painterRegency Portraits Catalogue Entry
Sitter associated with 12 portraits
Sir George Beaumont was one of the most influential patrons of the day. He was also the president of the British Institution, which was established in 1806 to provide an alternative exhibition space to the Royal Academy. In 1821, he travelled to Rome to seek out the young British artists whose flourishing academy he had heard so much about. Once in Rome, Beaumont met some of them and offered a few, including Charles Eastlake and John Gibson, prestigious commissions. In 1823, once Beaumont had returned to London and apparently on his instigation, the British Institution presented the infant British academy with a substantial gift of £200.
