Sir Thomas Beecham, 2nd Bt (1879-1961), Conductor
Sitter associated with 17 portraits
Conductor. The grandson of the patentee of 'Beecham's Powders', he studied music and in 1906 founded the New Symphony Orchestra. In 1911 he presented Diaghilev's Russian Ballet, and in 1929 created the first Delius Festival in London. He founded the London Philharmonic Orchestra in 1932, and formed the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in 1946. In the 1950s Beecham was much in demand as a conductor in the USA, Paris and London, where he was closely associated with the Promenade concerts held at the Royal Albert Hall . Something of his flamboyant personality is conveyed here.
