Born and educated in Paris, Bellot joined the French Navy in 1843. In 1851 he volunteered to accompany William Kennedy on the Prince Albert in search of Sir John Franklin. Bellot sailed again to the Arctic regions in 1853. While travelling to carry dispatches to Sir Edward Belcher, he fell in a crack in the ice, near Cape Bowden and drowned. His diary, narrating his Arctic adventures, was published in 1855.
