Composer and Professor of Composition at the Royal Academy of Music (1946-68). On advice from Ravel, Lennox Berkeley studied composition in Paris where he met Stravinsky and Poulenc (1926-32). His oeuvre ranges from oratorio to symphonies, operas and chamber works. Notable works include Serenade for Strings (1940) and his concertos for piano. His vocal and choral music is particularly admired and includes Four Poems of St Teresa of Avila (1947, written for Kathleen Ferrier) and The Hill of the Graces (1975).
