Bolingbroke's distinguished early career as Tory Secretary of State came to an end with he accession of George I in 1715. Shortly after, he fled to France to escape trial for his alleged intrigues against the Hanoverian succession. In France, Bolingbroke joined the exiled King James the 'Old Pretender' as his Secretary of State only to be dismissed for his reluctant support for the Jacobite Rising in Scotland. He returned to England on his pardon in 1726, with his essays in the The Craftsman, and Opposition periodical, Bolingbroke began to lead a fierce periodical press campaign against the Whig government and its politics.
