Sir Maurice Bowra

Sir Maurice Bowra was a classical scholar who was associated with Oxford University throughout his adult life. Born in China, he entered Oxford in 1915, returning to complete his studies after serving in the First World War. He was made a fellow of Wadham College in 1922 and was elected warden in 1938, a post he retained for the rest of his life. He served as Professor of Poetry (1946-51) and as Vice Chancellor (1951-4). Bowra wrote and edited scholarly books in many areas of literature, but he is particularly known for his studies of ancient Greek poetry and culture.
