In 1827, Brookfield was articled to a solicitor at Leeds, but he left this position to enter Trinity College, Cambridge, two years later. There he became the friend of Arthur Henry Hallam and Alfred Tennyson. In 1834, he became tutor to George William (later 4th Lord) Lyttelton, with whom he shared an interest in education. Brookfield was ordained into the Church of England in 1834. In 1848, he was appointed inspector of schools; he held this post for seventeen years during which time he also served as a preacher at Berkeley Chapel, Mayfair. Brookfield was appointed honorary chaplain to the Queen in 1860, and later was made chaplain-in-ordinary.
