Robert Carrington was born Robert John Smith. His father, also Robert Smith, was created 1st Baron Carrington in 1797, and his son changed his surname by royal licence in 1839. Carrington entered Parliament as an MP in 1818, and remained there until succeeding to his title in 1838.
