Edward Henry Carson, 1st Baron Carson
(1854-1935), Ulster leader and advocateSitter in 20 portraits
A lawyer by training, Carson became Solicitor-General for Ireland in 1892 and for England in 1900. He made his name in some famous legal cases, notably the libel action brought by Oscar Wilde against the Marquess of Queensberry in 1895. A fervent Unionist, in 1910 he became leader of the Irish Unionist MPs at Westminster. When the Home Rule Bill was introduced in 1912, Carson used all the means at his disposal to resist its passage. He spoke against the Bill in the House of Commons, organised rallies in Ireland and oversaw the raising and arming of the Ulster Volunteer Force (UVF). Ireland was on the brink of civil war when the outbreak of World War I led to the suspension of Home Rule.
