Sitter in 2 portraits
Denham was a soldier who had fought in the Napoleonic Wars and was decorated with the Waterloo medal. In 1821 he volunteered to join one of several expeditions, sent by the British government, to explore the African interior. After difficulties with the Pasha of Tripoli, and weakened by malaria, the expedition struggled across the Sahara to become the first Europeans to see Lake Chad in 1823.
