The only surviving daughter of James I, King of England and Scotland. In 1613 she married Frederick, the Elector Palatine. He accepted the throne of Bohemia in 1619, but after a year reigning they were expelled by the Catholic League and forced to live in exile in The Hague. Elizabeth's courage in the face of disaster and her subsequent hardships in exile, combined with her beauty, made her a legend in England as 'The Winter Queen'. Her grandson eventually returned to England as King George I.
