Mid-Georgian Portraits Catalogue Entry

Sitter associated with 7 portraits
Fitzpatrick entered Parliament in 1770. He was opposed to the American War of Independence but in 1777 was ordered to join his battalion in America. After his return Fitzpatrick became a leading figure in the Whig opposition. He was brother-in-law to radical politician Charles Fox and the two men became strong political allies. For almost twenty years, Fitzpatrick was at Fox's right hand in opposition to Pitt's first ministry. He supported parliamentary reform and opposed the French war in 1793. In 1806, he became Secretary of War. Fitzpatrick was a founder member of the Whig Club in 1784 and a principal contributor to The Rolliad magazine.
