King George III (1738-1820), Reigned 1760-1820
Sitter associated with 182 portraits
Eldest son of Frederick, Prince of Wales, and the first Hanoverian King to be born in England, George III reigned from 1760 to 1820. For the first part of his reign he was actively involved in government but after appointing William Pitt the younger to be Prime Minister in 1783, he took a political back seat. Content to play at 'Farmer George' he achieved greater popularity than when involved in ruling. He was plagued by bouts of illness, which were regarded as insanity; this led him to withdraw from public life in 1811, when the Regency began.
