One of Britain's most influential architects. Born in Scotland, he studied architecture in Scotland and Italy. He moved to London in 1708, and attracted the notice of the Earl of Mar. In 1713, with the help of Mar, Gibbs became joint surveyor, with Nicholas Hawksmoor, for the new churches to be built under the Act for Fifty New Churches.
