Sitter in 25 portraits
Critic and author; held posts in the British Museum, the Board of Trade and the House of Lords Library; published many volumes of verse, criticism and biography and became one of the most influential literary figures of the age. Gosse also introduced Ibsen to the English public, translating two of his plays, but is now best remembered for Father and Son, 1907, a powerful portrait of his overbearing father.
