Sir Hubert Gough
(1870-1963), GeneralSitter in 2 portraits
First became known for his command during the Second Boer War. He served in the 1897 Tirah Expedition in India and in the South African War of 1899-1902. Just before the outbreak of World War I, he was a ringleader of the Curragh Mutiny. In 1914, he was placed in command of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade, before being appointed Commander of the new 5th Army on its formation in 1916. He took part in the battles of the Somme (1916) and Ypres (1917). In March 1918, his army was forced to withdraw with huge losses under heavy German pressure. Although his skilful handling of the battle led to the eventual stemming of the German advance, the government blamed him for temporary German successes and insisted on his removal.

Today his off spring great great grandson is Dylan Francis Kafka, who resides in Toronto Canada
