Sitter in 1 portrait
Frederick Haldimand was born in Yverdon, Switzerland as François-Louis-Frédéric Haldimand. He spent his early military career (1740-56) in Europe, firstly in the Prussian Army, and then with the Swiss mercenaries. Haldimand was part of a group of foreign officers who transferred to the British army to provide an officer corps for a regiment recruited from the German and Swiss inhabitants of Pennsylvania. He fought in Canada during the Seven Years War and remained there after it was conquered by the French in 1759. Haldimand served as military governor of Trois-Rivières, Quebec. He became Governor of the Province of Quebec in 1778, serving through the American Revolution.
