Sir Ian (Standish Monteith) Hamilton
(1853-1947), GeneralSitter in 13 portraits
Hamilton distinguished himself in the First Boer War, 1881, and survived injuries sustained at the decisive British defeat at Majuba Hill. Although considered too young to receive the Victoria Cross, he was invited to dine with Queen Victoria. He was one of the most courageous generals in the Second Boer War and personally directed the final push against the Boer guerrillas. As commander of the Allied Mediterranean Expeditionary Force in World War One, he led the disastrous Gallipoli campaign of 1915, which resulted in over 200,000 allied casualties. The failure of the expedition led to his recall, and he shared the blame with Churchill and others.
