Dudley Francis Stuart Ryder, 3rd Earl of Harrowby
(1831-1900), Educationalist and politician; MP for Lichfield and Liverpool and President of the Board of TradeSitter in 9 portraits
Dudley Ryder entered Parliament as an MP in 1856, lost his seat four years later and did not return to the Commons until 1868. From the start of his time in politics, he had stressed the importance of education, not a Conservative political priority at the time, and he was a member of the first London school Board of Education. He was also involved in drafting the Education Bill of 1876. Ryder was said to come 'closer than anyone in the Conservative party to embodying the Disraelian ideal of a socially-conscious aristocracy'. He served as Lord Privy Seal and later as President of the Board of Trade. On his father's death in 1882, he became Earl of Harrowby.
