Edward John Littleton, 1st Baron Hatherton (1791-1863), Politician, Chief Secretary for Ireland and MP for Staffordshire

Edward Littleton entered Parliament as an MP in 1812. He sat on many committees relating to subjects including criminal laws, finance and the Bank of England. In 1833, he was appointed Chief Secretary to Ireland, in which post he had to deal with the vexed and difficult question of the Irish tithes on which the government was divided. After his resignation in 1834, he was never appointed to any other ministerial office. He was created Baron Hatherton and took his seat in the Lords in 1835.
