William Hickey was a lawyer, but he is best known for his lengthy Memoirs, written between 1808 and 1810 and published between 1913 and 1925, which, in their manuscript form, cover 740 closely written pages. Hickey's Memoirs give an extraordinarily vivid picture of life in the various places he lived, namely London, Calcutta, Madras and Jamaica.
